Hard red winter wheat is the most commonly grown wheat variety in the United States. Most of it is grown in the Plains states of the Midwest. Like other winter wheats, it is planted in the fall and grows only a few inches before it goes into winter dormancy. Many home mills use hard red winter wheat, which has a stronger flavor than alternative white wheat. It is also called "red wheat" because of its red skin. The berries appear slightly darker than most white. With a protein content of about 10.5%, it is extremely versatile as a medium-strength flour. Depending on the time of sowing, winter wheat may yield higher berry yields. Hard winter wheat has a higher gluten content than spring wheat. Brazil is a country known for its diversified agricultural production. Although soybean, corn and sugarcane are the country's main crops, wheat production has also increased in recent years. Brazil consumes around 12 million tonnes of wheat a year, and there are plans to further increase national production. The Brazilian government has set up initiatives to encourage farmers to grow wheat. The Embrapa agricultural research institute is working on developing tropical strains and moving production northwards into the tropical cerrado savannah. All in all, wheat production in Brazil is on the rise, and there are initiatives in place to continue increasing national production. The country has the potential to become a major player in global wheat production.
